LECTURE ON BIOINSPIRATION LED INNOVATION-FROM LAB TO INDUSTRY

Bioinspired materials have become an essential part in promoting innovation and breakthroughs in the modern material industry. DST Technology Enabling Center (TEC) has been in the forefront of networking for inter and multidisciplinary translation research projects and creating an ecosystem for the transfer of technology and entrepreneurship culture. The Institution Innovation Council (IIC) is a portal to establish a functional ecosystem for scouting ideas and pre-incubation of ideas. With this note, DST TEC & IIC organized an interactive lecture on ‘Bioinspiration led innovation- from lab to industry’ on 06 Feb 2023. Dr Kishore Paknikar, IIT Mumbai, was the keynote speaker of the day. H’nble Vice Chancellor Prof Satheesh Kumar Bhandary, president of the function, explained the range of activities conducted by TEC and IIC to create an ecosystem for translational research. Prof Dr Indrani Karunasagar initiated the program with the welcome address and explained the theme of the day. Prof Dr Iddya Karunasagar introduced the distinguished guest to the participants. Dr Paknikar gave an overview of discoveries in the field of the biohydrometallurgy industry. He explained about the process of biomining and bioleaching, whereby metals are extracted from the ores through bacterial oxidation. He discussed on various aspects of microbe-associated extraction of minerals & acid drainage etc. He further gave a gist of trending research in areas of bead-type biosorbent technology, electrochemical micro and nano-systems technology and magneto-tactic microorganism. The lecture followed an interactive session with all the participants. A total of 88 participants, including staff from various institutes, research scholars UG and PG students took part in the session. Dr Srinikethan, President IIC delivered the vote of thanks.

NITTE UNIVERSITY ORGANISES INTERACTION WITH FOOD INDUSTRY ON THE OCCASION OF WORLD FOOD DAY 2022

World Food Day 2022 was organized by the Nitte University Technology Enabling Center (NUTEC) at Paneer campus with an interactive discussion session with food industry representatives and other stakeholders on 18 October, 2022. World Food Day marks the foundation of Food and Agriculture Organisation of United nations and the theme of 2022 World Food Day was “Leave no one behind” in the march towards better food production, better nutrition, better environment and better life. The event was organized in partnership with Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), FSSAI, MSME Development and Facilitation Office (DFO), South Regional Office of International Federation of Inventor’s Association (IFIA) and partner institutions. The discussion was around four major themes (a) Technological needs of food industries (b) Food processing machineries (c) food safety and quality (d) regulation and compliance. Dr. Iddya Karunasagar, Advisor Nitte University and Member, Scientific Committee, FSSAI coordinated the meeting. He explained about the food technology focus of the Nitte Technology Enabling Center funded by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. He presented case studies of Nitte faculty developing few food related technologies, two of which have already been taken up by entrepreneurs for commercialization. He further informed the participants, the role NUTEC could play in meeting the technological and service needs of the food industry in the Region. Mr. Ananthesh Prabhu, Vice President of KCCI pointed out the need to develop eco-friendly packaging materials required by the food industry and the need for technologies to recycle plastic waste generated by the industry. Mr. Ahmed Mudasser, Director, KCCI highlighted the need for developing indigenous food processing machineries. Mr. Devaraj, Joint Director MSME DFO explained about various schemes available for partial reimbursement of costs incurred by MSMEs towards patents both national as well as international and trademark protection. Food industry representatives sought clarifications from FSSAI regarding State and Central licensing and labeling issues, particularly organic labeling. Dr. Divya and Dr. Preethy from FSSAI provided the clarifications to the industries. Representatives from seafood industry pointed out the need for food testing laboratory and KCCI representatives also supported this request. Dr. Iddya Karunasagar explained about schemes under Pradhan Mantri Kisan Sampada Yojana and Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana to support setting up of food testing laboratories that can be availed by private sector. He assured technical support from NUTEC for setting up food testing laboratories. NUTEC partner institutions, Canara Engineering College and St Joseph Engineering College spoke about the capabilities of their institutions to contribute towards development of food processing machineries. Mr. Jeevan Saldana, past president, CII spoke about his experience with food processing machinery indigenization and developing high quality equipment that are currently being exported to several countries. Mrs Preethy Nayak spoke about her experience as a Startup to bring the product of cold pressed fruit juices to the market and the challenges she had to face. Mr Vishwas from IFIA offered to work with NUTEC to support academia and industry in the development of innovative products in food sector. All the participants and stakeholders appreciated the efforts of NUTEC to bring industry and academia together and hoped that this would help making progress in innovation and commercialization of novel products.

The World food safety day celebration

Training of food handlers is a pre-requisite for ensuring food safety. With this mandate, an interactive session was organized for the Nitte University canteen and hostel mess workers to create awareness on hygienic practices to ensure food safety. The event was part of the ‘World food safety day’ celebration organized at the Technology Enabling Centre, Nitte (DU), on June 07, 2022. Dr Praveen Kumar, FSSAI designated district food safety officer, D.K., was the chief guest of the day. People involved in various food sector areas, including food system policy makers, processors and investors from in and around Mangaluru were invited to the celebration to create awareness about food safety and its importance. The session, on the whole, provided the audience with knowledge about the need for producing safe food for consumption by outlining necessary guidelines for the validation of food safety control measures. On this occasion, DST TEC Nitte (DU) organized a series of events for students and research scholars to create awareness among youngsters. The food safety celebration ended with the prize distribution to the awardees.

Research Scholars visit TEC

The research directorate in collaboration with IIC arranged a visit on 18 May 2022 to the DST Technology Enabling Centre followed by an interactive session. The purpose of the visit was to introduce the TEC that has been set up for the state of Karnataka, to the research scholars. During the interactive session, Prof Dr Iddya Karunasagar advisor Research and Patents explained the philosophy of setting up such centres in the country and its vision and mission. He enlightened the research scholars on how TEC could facilitate translational research by connecting the results of research to industry. It could network candidates with industry for professional support and play a role in improving the outcome of the research leading to technology transfer, help with startups or patenting. About 30 PhD scholars from the constituent institutes of Nitte (DU) participated in the session in two batches. A glimpse of ongoing activities at TEC and the efforts at bringing together academia and industry were briefly explained. National Intellectual Property Awareness Mission Webinar

As a part of national intellectual property awareness mission webinar series, “IPR and its protection in India” was organised by DST TEC in collaboration with IP India, NIPAM and NUCSER on 12 May 2022. Keynote speakers of the webinar were Dr Sharana Gouda, Assistant Controller of Patents and Designs, Patent office, Chennai and Shri Abhishek Singh, Examiner of patents and designs, Patent office, Chennai. Dr Anirban Chakraborty welcomed the resource persons and explained the importance of the webinar as India is rapidly moving in patenting inventions to establish her supremacy globally in startups and entrepreneurship. Shri Abhishek Singh discussed on patent rights, copyrights, trademark, design, ideation expression, economic rights and moral rights with interesting examples. He explained the entire process of application filing, including examination, the legal process and the fee involved at every stage until granting of patent. Dr Sharan Gouda spoke on patentability criteria under various sections with appropriate examples. Dr Iddya Karunasagar, as the research and patent advisor of the university moderated the entire session and provided inputs.
