Patent granted for Innovative SARS-CoV-2 Detection Technology

Nitte University has been granted an Indian patent for an invention titled “Unique Molecular Primers to Detect SARS-CoV-2 by Polymerase Spiral Reaction Assay.”
The patented technology was developed by Dr. Biswajit Maiti, Dr. Praveen Rai, and Dr. Anupama Karant. The invention focuses on the use of unique molecular primers in a Polymerase Spiral Reaction assay for the detection of SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for COVID-19.
The patent, granted by the Patent Office, Government of India, has been issued under Patent No. 599672, with Application No. 202141030214. The application was filed on July 6, 2021, and the patent was granted on August 18, 2026.
The achievement highlights the researchers’ contribution to molecular diagnostics and reflects Nitte University’s continued commitment to innovation and research in healthcare and biomedical sciences.
The patented assay may support the development of reliable molecular diagnostic approaches for identifying SARS-CoV-2, subject to further validation, regulatory requirements, and appropriate clinical application.
