Expert Lecture by Prof. Dr. Subha Bhassu

About

The FAO Reference Centre for Antimicrobial Resistance and Aquaculture Biosecurity, Nitte (Deemed to be University), and Nitte University Centre for Science Education and Research (NUCSER) jointly organized an expert lecture by Prof. Dr. Subha Bhassu, Institute of Biological Sciences, Universiti Malaya, on “Surveillance in One Health and Hologenomics”. The expert lecture was held on 11 August 2026, at the Seminar Hall, NUCSER.
Prof. Dr. Indrani Karunasagar, Head of the FAO Reference Centre for Antimicrobial Resistance and Aquaculture Biosecurity, welcomed the gathering and introduced the speaker. The presentation by Prof. Dr. Subha Bhassu provided an insightful overview of One Health, hologenomics, and genomic surveillance. The speaker highlighted the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health, with particular emphasis on antimicrobial resistance and emerging pathogens. A major focus was the surveillance of fungal pathogens, parasites, and bacteria in shrimp farms. The presentation demonstrated how 16S and 18S eDNA metagenomics can provide a rapid, non-invasive assessment of microbial diversity and identify potential pathogens. The identification of several fungal and bacterial species that have implications for shrimp, food, and human health underscored the importance of a farm-to-table One Health approach.
The speaker also presented an in vitro gastrointestinal infection model using HCT116 cells to study fungal effects on Wnt signaling and discussed CRISPR-Cas9-based suppression of fungal sporulation as a potential control strategy. The speaker highlighted how multi-omics and hologenomics can support healthier, safer, and more resilient aquaculture systems.
Prof. Dr. Iddya Karunasagar, Advisor- Research & Patents, NitteDU; and Prof. Dr. Anirban Chakraborty, Director- NUCSER, attended this informative session along with 120 participants, including students, faculty, and research scholars from NUCSER.
